SACRAMENTO, CA – The mysterious death of 39-year-old Jamie Reed, discovered in the parking structure of Kaiser South on July 24, has left her family and community advocates searching for answers. Despite speaking with Sacramento police detectives more than three months ago, Reed’s aunt, Blanchie Matlock, still does not know how her niece died. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office classified the cause of death as undetermined, and the police have indicated that no foul play is suspected at this time.
Reed, a mother of six with no preexisting conditions, was found dead in the parking lot, sparking confusion and frustration among her family and community advocates. Berry Accius, a community advocate, expressed concern over the lack of urgency in solving the case, particularly with cases involving women of color. This sentiment was echoed by Reed’s family, who feel that the authorities are not taking the investigation seriously, attributed to her being a Black woman.
The family’s calls for answers have been met with silence from the police, who have not provided any information. Despite the presence of video surveillance in the parking structure, the police are awaiting the coroner’s report before further investigating the incident. A toxicology report has shown no signs of drugs in Reed’s system, ruling out drugs as the cause of her death, but the coroner’s office has stated that finalizing the report could take six months or more.
The case is one of many deaths of undetermined causes in Sacramento County, which has left the community questioning the transparency and effectiveness of the investigative process. Additionally, an analysis found that deaths of undetermined cause significantly outnumbered homicides in the county, with Black people accounting for a disproportionately high percentage of these deaths.
Reed’s family and community advocates have been vocal about the lack of communication and transparency surrounding the case, highlighting a broader issue with how suspicious deaths are handled by the authorities. As they continue to seek answers and justice for Reed, the community remains hopeful for a resolution to this perplexing and tragic case.
