Vallejo Man Charged with Murder After Remains of Missing Woman Discovered in Backyard

VALLEJO, Calif. — A 41-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 28-year-old Renia Lewis, whose remains were discovered concealed in a backyard outbuilding. The Solano County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges on Thursday, asserting that Douglas Irwin Shaw is accused of using a knife in the fatal incident.

Lewis was reported missing on September 28, with her body located days later in an attic-like space behind a residence near 14th Street and Starr Avenue. Vallejo police officials indicated that the victim’s remains were dismembered before being hidden in the outbuilding, a detail conveyed by family members. “She was concealed in a way that obscured her from immediate view,” said Vallejo police Sgt. Rashad Hollis.

Investigators revealed that Shaw and Lewis did not have an established relationship and had only recently met. Shaw, who works as a mechanic at a local amusement park, was apprehended at his workplace soon after the police investigation commenced. He is a father of two daughters.

In the wake of Lewis’s death, her mother, Teri Lewis, expressed her heartbreak, describing the loss as “unreal” and calling for Shaw to face severe consequences. “I will never see my daughter again because of this monster,” she said emotionally, urging authorities to ensure Shaw receives a life sentence.

This incident follows a disturbing history for Shaw, who reportedly had a restraining order filed against him earlier this year by a former girlfriend. She characterized him as having a narcissistic personality and suggested that he struggles to acknowledge other people’s perspectives.

The investigation continues as authorities gather additional evidence and speak with witnesses, hoping to piece together the circumstances that led to the tragic death of Lewis. Community members have also expressed their shock, with calls for justice resonating throughout Vallejo.

As local law enforcement ramps up efforts to address safety concerns in the area, the tragic case has highlighted the pressing issue of violence against women. Lewis’s family is advocating for increased awareness and preventive measures to protect individuals at risk.

With the preliminary court hearings set to continue, the community remains vigilant, pushing for accountability in a case that has shaken many to their core. As developments unfold, the impact of this incident is still being felt across the city and beyond.
