Verdict: Man Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Death of Cathedral Catholic High School Teacher

San Diego, California – A jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Jesse Milton Alvarez, a man accused of the murder of Cathedral Catholic High School teacher Mario Fierro in February 2021. Alvarez, 33, has been convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances of lying in wait for the killing of Fierro, who was shot multiple times outside his North Park home. The sentencing of Alvarez, facing life in prison without parole, is set for May 10th.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Alvarez plotted Fierro’s death upon learning about Fierro’s engagement to another CCHS teacher – Amy Gembara, whom Alvarez had previously dated. They painted Alvarez as a jealous and possessive individual who stalked Gembara persistently even after their relationship ended in 2019.

Gembara testified about Alvarez’s unsettling behavior, which led her to take safety measures such as changing addresses, installing security cameras, and eventually moving. Alvarez’s actions, including attempting to apply for jobs at CCHS multiple times, demonstrated his fixation on Gembara and his desire to be near her.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Alvarez meticulously planned Fierro’s murder, conducting research on shooting techniques and searches related to eliminating his romantic rival. Alvarez, however, claimed that his online searches were merely a way to vent his emotions and that he did not seriously intend to harm Fierro.

On the stand, Alvarez defended his actions as self-defense, alleging that Fierro attacked him first upon their encounter outside Fierro’s residence. Despite Alvarez’s claims, prosecutors argued that the evidence suggested premeditation on Alvarez’s part, pointing to his extensive planning leading up to the tragic event.

The jury’s verdict underscores the tragic outcome of a love triangle turned deadly, shedding light on the consequences of obsession and possessiveness in relationships. Alvarez’s sentencing marks the end of a trial that has exposed the dangerous consequences of unchecked emotions and the devastating impact it can have on multiple lives. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and support when faced with difficult emotions to prevent such senseless acts of violence from occurring.
