MOUNT DORA, Fla. – It was a year ago, on December 31, 2022, when unspeakable horror struck an unsuspecting retiree and his wife in this small Florida town. The murder of Sharon and Darryl Getman has left their family, as well as the community, stunned and devastated.
Chief Mike Gibson of the Mount Dora Police described the crime as “ruthless and tragic.” Vickie Williams, the alleged perpetrator, is facing charges after allegedly stabbing the elderly couple to death. However, questions remain about her mental competency to stand trial, leading to psychological examinations being ordered by the State Attorney’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office. The state is pursuing the death penalty, citing the particularly heinous nature of the crime and the vulnerability of the victims due to their advanced age.
The crime scene was described as a graphic display of explosive violence, with both victims suffering brutal injuries. Williams, who was initially arrested and charged with grand theft auto in Georgia, has been linked to a series of bizarre occurrences in Mount Dora in the hours leading up to the murders. Surveillance footage captured her presence in the vicinity before and after the crime took place.
The case is expected to be prolonged, possibly involving treatment for Williams in a mental hospital before she can stand trial. Meanwhile, the Mount Dora community remains unsettled by the tragic events that took the lives of a beloved, long-time resident couple.
