Nkoranza South, Ghana – A routine political campaign event turned chaotic when supporters of Harriet Kyeremanteng Oppong, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Nkoranza South, were allegedly attacked by members of the opposing National Democratic Congress (NDC). The incident took place during a community visit in Nsunensa on Friday, March 29, 2024.
Tensions escalated when Oppong and her team tried to discuss the achievements of the NPP government, including ongoing development projects such as the rehabilitation of the Nsunensa Junction–Nsunensa–Meta Road. The NDC members reportedly reacted violently to allegations of misinformation surrounding the road project’s funding, blocking the team’s exit with a tipper truck and subjecting them to verbal abuse and intimidation.
In response to the incident, the NPP Communications Directorate issued a statement condemning the violence and calling for political accountability. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as Oppong’s team faced aggression, with the incumbent MP allegedly leading the attack, showcasing the heightened political tensions in Nkoranza South.
The NPP highlighted a history of intimidation by the MP and urged community leaders to promote peace and civility in political discourse. Authorities are investigating the incident as stakeholders work to address underlying tensions ahead of the upcoming elections in the Nkoranza South constituency.
The NPP statement accused the incumbent MP of using his influence to secure contracts for himself and his family instead of being a development agent for the people of Nkoranza.
