Virginia 1-year-old little boy dead of broken ribs and lacerated liver at the hands of his babysitter

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murdering a toddler in his care after a series of distressing events allegedly led to the child’s death. This tragic incident unfolded on April 5 when police were called to a residence on Cedar Avenue for a report of an unresponsive child, according to local law enforcement.

Upon arrival, paramedics declared the 20-month-old boy dead. An autopsy later revealed that the child suffered severe internal trauma, including broken ribs and a lacerated liver, which ultimately led to his demise. The Newport News Police Department indicated that the injuries were consistent with acts of violence.

After conducting a detailed investigation, authorities arrested Zai-Twond Perry. He faces charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse. The boy’s mother had reportedly entrusted Perry, a known family friend, with babysitting duties.

In a conversation with detectives, Perry allegedly confessed to a sequence of events which culminated in the child’s injury. He reportedly discovered the boy covered in feces and, in a moment of frustration, squeezed the toddler’s ribs while bathing him. The child suffered significant bruising around his torso.

Further examination showed a serious liver laceration, approximately three inches long, that resulted in internal bleeding. Bleeding on the brain, possibly from shaking, was also noted. Throughout that day, Perry is said to have sent the boy’s mother alarming messages implying that the child needed to be out of the home.

Perry reportedly asserted that the child suffered a head injury by hitting the side of the bathtub. However, medical findings disputed this claim, attributing injuries instead to non-accidental trauma.

Currently, Perry remains detained on different charges, awaiting his next court appearance set for July 2. Details regarding his legal representation have not been disclosed.

This heartbreaking case has intensified community concern around child safety and the responsibilities of those entrusted with childcare. As the legal process unfolds, the Newport News community grapples with the loss of a young life and seeks justice for the innocent victim.
