SISSONVILLE, WV – An early morning call to 911 led authorities to a quiet neighborhood in Sissonville over the weekend, where they discovered the aftermath of a fatal shooting that left a woman dead and her husband in police custody on a murder charge.
Shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, deputies arrived at a home following a distressing report from Jason Joe Phillips, 46. Phillips told emergency dispatchers that he had shot his wife, Joanna Lynn Phillips, also 46, in the kitchen of their residence. According to law enforcement, the initial call and subsequent statements at the scene indicated ongoing conflict between the couple.
Investigators say Phillips met officers at the door and calmly surrendered. He allegedly explained to deputies that he had reached a breaking point in an ongoing dispute, culminating in the fatal shooting. Joanna Phillips was found dead at the scene, having suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The arrest proceeded without resistance, and Jason Phillips was quickly transported to South Central Regional Jail, where he is being held without bail. He faces charges of first-degree murder and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing later this month.
Court records paint a troubling picture of the couple’s history, revealing earlier disputes that had brought police to the home on multiple occasions. In December 2021, Joanna Phillips reported an incident in which her husband allegedly threatened her with a firearm, even striking her in the mouth. He was charged with domestic assault, battery, and brandishing a weapon. However, those charges were dismissed in early 2022.
The pattern of disturbance continued. In March of this year, Joanna again called authorities, telling officers that Jason had attacked her physically after a night out. This led to another domestic battery charge and a future court date, which remained pending at the time of the fatal shooting.
Neighbors and community members expressed shock at the fatal escalation, noting that while incidents at the home had become more frequent in recent years, the end result was both tragic and unexpected. Local authorities urged anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek help and highlighted the resources available for those at risk.
Phillips, now facing the most serious charge of his life, will answer to the court on December 29. The investigation into the events leading up to Joanna Phillips’ death continues as authorities work to understand what drove the fatal confrontation.
