SPENCER, Ind. — A nursing professional has raised serious allegations against a medical director of a local rehabilitation facility, claiming that the doctor’s negligence contributed to the deaths of several patients. Coby Simpson, who has an extensive background in healthcare, asserts that his termination resulted from his efforts to expose these concerns.
Simpson, a nurse certified in multiple specialties, began his position at Owen Valley Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in April 2025. Initially drawn to the clinic’s positive ambiance, he soon grew alarmed by the practices of Dr. Diane Wells, who has been a physician in the region since 1976. Simpson alleges that Dr. Wells disregarded requests for critical patient care and that her actions ultimately led to fatalities.
Among the incidents Simpson recounted was a case involving a patient with advanced cancer who had been admitted for diagnostic testing. Despite the patient initially stabilizing, Simpson claims that after Dr. Wells prescribed a high morphine dosage during a late-night call, the patient passed away shortly thereafter. Simpson expressed dismay over the perceived delay in care, which he believes caused unnecessary suffering.
In another troubling account, Simpson described a situation involving a different patient whom he felt required continued antibiotic treatment. After Dr. Wells discontinued the medications, Simpson noticed the patient exhibiting severe symptoms. When he attempted to convey these concerns during his communication with the doctor, he alleges that she became irritated and dismissed his requests for further evaluation.
Dr. Wells removed vital monitoring equipment from the patient’s room without consulting the family, according to Simpson. He claims that the family had specifically requested the equipment remain, as it provided them comfort during a challenging period. Shortly afterward, Dr. Wells reportedly declared the patient deceased without adequately documenting the event, raising further scrutiny over her practices.
Public perception of Dr. Wells is mixed. Her biography highlights her commitment to compassionate healthcare, yet online reviews reveal a range of patient experiences, with some praising her diligence while others criticize her communication skills. Some patients noted troubling experiences, including rushed appointments and unaddressed concerns about their treatment.
After bringing these issues to light, Simpson alleges that he faced retaliation, including harassment and even threats to his safety. He subsequently filed complaints with multiple state agencies to seek accountability, including the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, which has opened an investigation into the claims made against Dr. Wells.
Simpson’s story has drawn attention to potential systemic issues within healthcare facilities, as he actively collaborates with law enforcement to gather testimonies from other patients and staff members who may have experienced similar incidents. This unfolding situation has raised questions regarding oversight and patient safety in rehabilitation settings, highlighting the need for thorough investigations by involved agencies.
As the claims continue to receive attention, the investigations will be crucial in determining the veracity of Simpson’s allegations and assessing the oversight of healthcare practices in the region.
