Whittier Man Fatally Shot after Confronting Shooter at Gunpoint

MONTEBELLO, Calif. — A Whittier man was fatally shot in a Montebello neighborhood on Dec. 28, according to a sheriff’s detective. The 44-year-old man was reportedly confronting the shooter at gunpoint when the shooting occurred.

The 23-year-old Los Angeles man, who was the shooter, remained at the scene and was arrested the following day. Despite his arrest, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office did not file charges against him, as the incident was determined to be a case of self-defense, said sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong.

The shooting took place shortly before midnight in the 1600 block of Neil Armstrong Street, near apartment complexes. The incident occurred when the Los Angeles man drove there to drop off a woman friend. When they arrived, the Whittier man approached them, brandished a gun, demanded the woman, and pointed the weapon at the driver. In response, the driver shot him, De Jong said.

It was revealed that the victim, the shooter, and the woman are acquainted with each other, according to the lieutenant. The victim succumbed to his injuries from multiple gunshot wounds.
