Widow of Deaf Victims in Maine Shooting Struggles to Heal During Holiday Season

LEWISTON, Maine – This holiday season was particularly difficult for Liz Seal and her four children after the tragic loss of her husband in a mass shooting on Oct. 25, 2023. More than two months after the shooting, Seal, who is deaf, shared her ongoing struggle with ABC News Live, emphasizing the lingering pain felt by her family and friends.

The shooting, which claimed 18 lives and left 13 others wounded, was carried out by U.S. Army reservist Robert Card at two locations in Lewiston. Josh Seal, who was also deaf, was among the victims, leaving his family and the community grieving.

The deaf community has come together in solidarity to support one another as they work through the healing process. Seal described her husband as a compassionate advocate for the Deaf community and lamented the difficulty of receiving news about his death due to a lack of interpreters in hospitals.

Despite the heartbreak, Seal remains appreciative of the outpouring of support for the deaf community and the efforts to honor the victims. The community’s resilience is evident through the memorial gatherings and exhibits being organized to honor and remember those affected by the tragedy.

As Liz Seal and her family continue to cope with their loss, they find moments of comfort and connection, cherishing memories of their loved one. The community’s strength and unity in the face of adversity are essential for their healing process and moving forward.
