1-year-old Minnesota boy dies after mom repeatedly slams his head into the wall and she claims his dad ran him over

CASS LAKE, MN – A Minnesota woman was sentenced to nearly two decades in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her 23-month-old son, a charge that stemmed from a horrific incident in August 2023.

Larena Jackson, 31, admitted to killing her son, Aaryan, through blunt force trauma. She confessed to authorities that, under the influence of drugs, she repeatedly slammed the toddler’s head against a bedroom wall inside their Cass Lake residence.

On the day of the incident, Jackson called law enforcement with a fabricated story. She falsely claimed that Aaryan had been run over by his father, Robert Ortez. However, Ortez had an alibi, as his vehicle was in the repair shop at the time. Investigators quickly unraveled Jackson’s story, discovering extensive blood stains and holes in the wall that matched the size of a toddler’s head.

Faced with mounting evidence, Jackson entered a Norgaard plea, a type of guilty plea in Minnesota that acknowledges a defendant’s inability to recall specifics of the crime due to intoxication or other memory impairments. In February, she formally pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Ortez, still grappling with the loss of his son, expressed confusion and devastation over the events. “She took my baby’s life,” he stated, mourning the unanswered questions that remain about the motive behind her actions.

Aaryan suffered his injuries on the second day of August and clung to life for five days before succumbing. The horror of his death reverberated throughout the Cass Lake community, leaving many shocked and heartbroken.

Jackson’s legal troubles included additional charges ranging from first-degree assault to fleeing law enforcement. Ultimately, she was sentenced to serve at least 17 and a half years behind bars, with credit for time already served.

“I still don’t know, to this day, what really happened,” Ortez said, echoing a sentiment felt by those closest to the tragedy. The case has left an indelible mark on everyone involved, sparking conversations about drug influence and child welfare.

Despite Jackson’s plea, Ortez made it clear that he believes the sentence does not match the gravity of the crime, expressing that Jackson “deserves life in prison.”

As the community seeks healing, questions linger about how such a tragedy could unfold, spotlighting the ongoing struggle to understand and prevent violence fueled by substance abuse.
