DELTONA, FL – A Florida man who recently posted bond following a domestic violence arrest shot and killed his ex-wife before ending his own life, police say.
Authorities allege that Samuel Vaia, 33, fatally shot Ashley Vaia, 38, at a home in Deltona. Her body was discovered in the early hours of Monday by her teenage daughter, prompting a swift police response around 2:22 a.m.
As Volusia County deputies arrived on the scene, they began searching for Samuel Vaia, who had fled. Soon, law enforcement tracked his car speeding north out of the county. During the pursuit, Vaia crashed his vehicle, and upon approaching the scene, officers found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Just days before the incident, Samuel Vaia had been arrested on charges of domestic battery against Ashley Vaia on March 23. He was released from custody the next day after posting a bond.
Court orders mandated him to surrender all of his firearms, yet Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that Vaia had turned over only three weapons, leaving others unaccounted for.
Sheriff Chitwood highlighted the limitations of protection orders, calling them “just a piece of paper” that could not ensure safety against someone determined to cause harm. He expressed the belief that Samuel Vaia was resolute in his intention to kill his ex-wife.
The estranged couple shared a 2-year-old child, while Ashley was also the mother of a 21-year-old and the teenage girl who found her deceased. Despite being separated, the Vaias were reportedly working on reconciling their relationship. Their recent altercation arose from Samuel’s accusations of infidelity against Ashley.
After the crash, Samuel Vaia was transported to a Deltona area hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The tragic series of events has left the Deltona community in shock and mourning as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to this devastating outcome.
