READFIELD, ME – A Maine man is undergoing psychiatric evaluation after being charged with the murder of his wife and is accused of attacking his mother, authorities confirmed.
Maine State Police responded to an emergency call on the morning of Feb. 19, which led them to a residence in Readfield. There, first responders discovered the body of 32-year-old Margeaux Whittemore in the driveway.
Inside the home, investigators found Dorothy Whittemore, 67, critically injured. The suspect, 34-year-old Sam Whittemore, was later located by law enforcement officials after allegedly fleeing the scene.
The police reported that Sam Whittemore’s father was not present at the residence during the incident but arrived shortly afterward. Dorothy Whittemore’s condition has since improved, according to hospital reports, although she remains under medical care.
Margeaux Whittemore’s body underwent an autopsy on Feb. 20, but while the manner of death was confirmed as homicide, the specific cause has not been released.
Sam Whittemore’s professional background includes an engineering position at SpaceX, and he has since worked on coral reef restoration projects. His late wife, Margeaux, was a yoga instructor whose travels were documented on social media, though her accounts had not been updated since late last year.
The couple had reportedly returned to Maine to visit Sam Whittemore’s parents. However, officials have not disclosed what specifically triggered the tragic events that unfolded.
Following his capture, Whittemore was transferred to a hospital for mental health assessment before being booked at Kennebec County Jail with a murder charge. He remains in custody without bail. A court appearance was initially set for Feb. 21, but proceedings were delayed.
A video conference saw his defense attorneys introducing concerns about Whittemore’s mental competency, prompting the judge to order a detailed competency evaluation, along with arranging a future status conference.
