: 6th grader killed, 5 injured in Iowa school shooting

A student opened fire at a middle school in Burlington, Iowa, and killed a 6th grader while injuring 5 others. The shooting happened on September 11, 2014.

The student fired several shots with a .22-caliber gun, hitting sixth-grade teacher Krista Hascall and some students before a teacher talked the student into dropping the weapon. The teacher concealed the gun until law enforcement officers arrived.

The sheriff’s office said a student had been in custody after the shooting. Initial investigation showed that the student had acted alone.

As a response to the incident, the school’s students were taken to a nearby building. Parents were asked to come and pick up their children.

The shooting marked the first time in over a century that a student had fired a gun in a school building in Iowa, according to the state’s Department of Public Safety.

The student’s motivation for the shooting has not been disclosed. The school shooting resulted in the death of a sixth grader and injured five others. No prior incidents of gun violence at the school had been reported before the shooting.
