Abandoned Shar-Pei Puppies Found by River in Niagara Falls, Resulting in Animal Cruelty Charges for Local Man

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario – A local man in Niagara Falls faces animal cruelty charges after abandoning Shar-Pei puppies near the Niagara River.

The six to eight-week-old pups were discovered near Niagara Pkwy on Dec. 28, with seven of them found abandoned in the frigid waters. Sadly, one had died and two had disappeared, leaving four puppies to be rescued. The investigation, a joint effort between the Niagara Police and Niagara Parks Police, led to the identification of a suspect.

On Jan. 10, authorities raided a Niagara Falls home and arrested Mario Sid Silva, charging him with causing unnecessary pain to an animal and killing an animal. Meanwhile, the surviving puppies are under the care of the Niagara Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) until suitable homes can be found for them.

The incident prompted a reminder from the police that cruelty to animals is a criminal offense, urging pet owners to seek alternatives if they can no longer care for their pets. Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the police.
