After Purchasing Knife, Man Fatally Stabs Stranger in Supermarket Parking Lot Over Brief Encounter

PHOENIX, Ariz. — A tragic encounter in a supermarket parking lot led to a fatal stabbing shortly after a man purchased a knife, authorities reported. The incident unfolded on the night of December 29, 2024, when 48-year-old Damian Mitchell bought a paring knife along with a can opener at a Safeway grocery store.

According to a police affidavit, the purchase was made using a prepaid debit card, which later assisted in identifying Mitchell. Following his transaction, he left the store and had a brief verbal exchange with Reminisce Biddle as they crossed paths near the store’s entrance. The nature of their conversation remains unclear; however, it sparked a sequence of events that would soon turn deadly.

Witnesses described how, after the exchange, Mitchell seemed to follow Biddle into a more secluded area behind the store. There, he allegedly stabbed Biddle once in the chest, an act that would ultimately lead to dire consequences. Bystanders reported seeing both individuals leave the scene on bicycles, with Biddle visibly holding the injury to their chest.

Law enforcement quickly apprehended Mitchell in the vicinity. Initially, he claimed to have handed the knife to another person who had asked for it to prepare food and alleged that this individual was responsible for the stabbing. However, his account began to unravel under questioning, particularly when he struggled to provide specific details about the alleged food item the supposed assailant had.

Subsequent investigations confirmed Mitchell’s involvement in the stabbing. He was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed the loss’s profound impact, stating, “This defendant chose to turn a brief encounter into a moment of violence, taking Reminisce’s life and leaving his family and loved ones with irreparable loss.”

The devastating outcome of such a routine exchange serves as a jarring reminder of how swiftly a disagreement can escalate to violence, leaving a community grappling with the aftermath. The case underscores ongoing concerns surrounding public safety and the handling of confrontations in everyday settings.
