SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Two Pennsylvania State Troopers were shot while responding to a welfare check on Thursday morning in a rural area of northeastern Susquehanna County, where a nearby neighbor allegedly shot a woman before ambushing the officers. The incident unfolded around 11:17 a.m. on State Route 171 in Thompson Township.
According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Carmine Faino, 61, opened fire on Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins as they arrived on the scene. Tragically, Lori Wasko, 57, was shot and killed outside her home prior to the officers’ arrival. Faino was killed during the altercation with law enforcement. Both troopers sustained serious injuries and were subsequently airlifted to a medical facility, where they are currently in stable condition.
In a press conference, Pennsylvania State Police officials detailed a coordinated response involving multiple units and local law enforcement, which established a secure perimeter around the area.
