Victim Shares Heart-Wrenching Impact of Violent Carjacking by Teen Girls in Queensland Court

Cairns, Australia — A 40-year-old woman has recounted the trauma and lasting impact of a brutal attack by three teenage girls, which occurred last November at a shopping center in Edmonton. In a statement presented in Cairns Children’s Court, she described how the violence has transformed her life, leaving her both physically and emotionally scarred.

On the evening of November 5, the woman was walking to her car when she was confronted by the trio—aged 13, 15, and 17. The court was shown CCTV footage depicting the harrowing assault, where the girls can be seen kicking, punching, and stabbing her before dragging her to the ground. The woman suffered a serious head injury, leaving her temporarily paralyzed and inflicted with complications that led to a spinal injury.

In a deeply personal account, she explained the series of physical and psychological ramifications resulting from the attack. “I will never be the person I was before,” she told the court, recalling a moment of sheer terror, wondering if she would survive. Her injuries included a stab wound, numerous bruises, and a broken spine that ultimately required two surgical procedures. The impact has forced her into a reclusive lifestyle, where she frequently relies on her family for emotional and financial support.

After stealing her car keys, one attacker was seen moving her legs out of the way as they fled in the vehicle. The woman’s recovery has been slow and grueling; once a student eager to work with children, she now faces ongoing medical challenges and a loss of independence.

In a striking juxtaposition, the court was made aware of the difficult backgrounds of the offenders. The eldest, now 18, was acknowledged by Judge Dean Morzone KC as someone who had endured significant trauma in her youth, including exposure to domestic violence and personal loss. The judge noted that while her upbringing influenced her actions, it did not absolve her of responsibility.

The younger girls were offered a chance to participate in a restorative justice program, which could lead to no convictions on their records if they successfully complete it. In contrast, the older girl declined the opportunity and was sentenced to nine months in detention, with half of that time to be served.

Despite the pain she has endured, the victim expressed hope for the future of the young assailants. During her statement, she emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, wishing for them to find a better path. “I can only hope that the girls who attacked me receive a chance for change and growth,” she stated.

This case highlights the complexities of youth crime, victimization, and the potential for redemption. As the woman continues her recovery, her commitment to fostering a more positive outcome for the offenders reflects a desire for meaningful change, not just for her own life, but for the broader community as well.
