SCOTTSDALE, AZ – A quiet neighborhood was shattered by screams early Monday morning, as a woman allegedly attacked her own mother in a furious stabbing spree after learning she would be admitted to mental health and alcohol treatment, authorities said.
What began as another routine day in the Scottsdale condo abruptly turned violent. Police say 24-year-old Ashland Crank became enraged when informed by her mother that she would soon be checked into a treatment facility, unraveling in the moments that followed. The mother had urged her daughter to get dressed before the confrontation escalated far beyond expectation.
According to investigators, Crank’s mother went outside to tidy up the backyard, but as she bent to do her chores, her daughter approached silently from behind. The attack was sudden—a flurry of knife blows fell upon the woman’s back, head, neck, and chest. Police later tallied at least 18 wounds, with blood spattered across multiple levels of the three-story home.
Cries for help from the wounded woman echoed through the condominium complex, drawing neighbors into the unfolding chaos. Several residents rushed to her aid as she managed to stagger from the backyard toward the front of the residence, bloodied and pleading for help. One witness saw Crank attempt to drag her mother into their garage, but was thwarted when her body blocked the safety sensor of the garage door, refusing to close.
Stunned bystanders could only watch as Crank’s mother—her clothes soaked through with blood—collapsed from her injuries on the sidewalk outside. According to witnesses, Crank then appeared to attempt lifesaving measures, perhaps realizing a crowd had gathered and police were on their way.
Officers who arrived on the scene entered the condo and found a grisly trail: blood tracing the floors and staircase, broken household items, and multiple knives left in plain sight. One of the blades was broken, stained with hair and blood, police said. The victim later told investigators her daughter had stabbed her with such force that one knife snapped in two, prompting the young woman to return to the kitchen and retrieve more weapons.
The mother’s desperate instincts may have saved her life. She told police she managed to avoid being forced upstairs, fearing she would not survive if she was taken further inside the home. From the ground, she could hear her daughter trying to mislead neighbors—claiming the injuries were self-inflicted.
Forensic evidence did not support that claim. Authorities noted that several wounds were located in areas impossible for the victim to reach herself, and video evidence from a neighbor documented Crank’s efforts to drag her mother, further contradicting her statements.
Crank offered various versions of what happened to detectives, first claiming she had seen her mother stab herself, then asserting she was simply emerging from a shower when she heard commotion. Police found little evidence to back up that claim, pointing out the dry shower and lack of recent use.
As her mother was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, she confided to detectives about Crank’s long-standing battles with mental health and substance abuse. The plan that day had been to visit a local behavioral health center to seek help for both Ashland and another daughter.
Following interviews and a review of physical evidence, Crank was arrested on charges that included attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
She is currently being held on a $300,000 cash bond, as investigators sort through the harrowing details of a case that has left a community shaken and a family forever changed.
