PALM DESERT, CA – The quiet of a Palm Desert hotel parking lot was shattered by violence in July 2022, leaving a woman and her companion dead in what authorities now describe as the tragic culmination of a volatile relationship.
Yaying “YaYa” Wu, 33, was the victim of a fatal attack that claimed her life and that of her boyfriend, Jesus Sanchez, 31. Both were discovered by Riverside County deputies outside the SpringHill Suites after an urgent call reported an assault with a deadly weapon. Paramedics arriving at the scene were unable to revive either victim.
YaYa Wu had recently told her husband, Kenny Wu, 36, that she intended to end their marriage. Friends would later describe her as a vibrant woman who was preparing to start a new chapter after months marked by personal struggle and tense exchanges with her spouse.
Authorities say her efforts to separate from Wu had become a focal point of escalating conflict. According to evidence presented in court, the couple’s marriage had unraveled in the wake of infidelity, allegations of stalking, and domestic violence. In the weeks before her death, Wu had made clear her desire for a divorce, signaling a new path forward with Sanchez.
On the afternoon of July 15, Wu and Sanchez arrived at the hotel, reportedly unaware that Kenny Wu was waiting for them in the parking lot. Investigators believe that, upon their arrival, Kenny Wu confronted the pair and attacked them with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries on both.
Nearby, deputies found Kenny Wu with self-inflicted wounds. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and subsequently taken into custody.
During the trial, prosecutors provided a detailed account of the couple’s deteriorating relationship. They contended that Yaying Wu had the right to move on from a troubled marriage, but instead became the target of deadly violence. The courtroom heard how Wu’s attempts to assert control and resolve feelings of betrayal spiraled toward the murders.
Defense attorneys argued that Kenny Wu’s discovery of his wife’s affair months earlier had triggered a painful emotional decline, building toward uncontrollable jealousy. They asserted that the situation escalated dramatically when Wu learned of the meeting between his wife and Sanchez at the Palm Desert hotel.
Jurors ultimately delivered a conviction on two counts of first-degree murder, acknowledging the prosecution’s argument that the act was premeditated. The verdict closed a chapter on a case that left two families grieving and the community shocked.
Sentencing for Kenny Wu is set for April 17, when he will face penalties for the double homicide.
