Arrest Made in Fatal Jersey City Shooting: Suspect Charged with Murder and Assault

Jersey City, New Jersey – Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in the McGinley Square neighborhood of Jersey City. Joseph Del Valle, a 36-year-old resident of Hoboken, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder in the death of 33-year-old Christoph Terrero Marte, as well as two counts of aggravated assault related to two other victims. Francisco Salcedo, a 42-year-old Hoboken resident, was also arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with aggravated assault.

The shooting took place on March 9, around 6:30 a.m., in Jersey City’s McGinley Square neighborhood. By the time officers arrived at the scene following reports of shots fired, the three victims had been taken to Jersey City Medical Center in private vehicles. Unfortunately, Marte was pronounced dead about an hour later, while the other two victims, a 31-year-old Jersey City man and a 28-year-old Union City man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting, nor have they provided information on the evidence that led to the arrests of Del Valle and Salcedo. Del Valle was taken into custody and booked into Hudson County jail on Tuesday, with his first court appearance pending. In addition to facing charges of murder and aggravated assault, he also faces two weapons charges.

Following Marte’s death, the first homicide in Jersey City in 2024, the city experienced a record low in homicides the previous year, with only 10 killings reported. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop expressed determination to continue efforts in reducing crime until it reaches zero. Similarly, New York City saw a significant decrease in murders from 438 in 2022 to 386 in 2023, according to police statistics.
