NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Authorities have apprehended a suspect in the violent assault of a 70-year-old Sikh man, a crime that has sent shockwaves through the local community. The incident occurred last week during an afternoon walk near the Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles, an area deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the Sikh community.
Harpal Singh was brutally attacked on Monday in a confrontation that escalated quickly. According to reports from the Sikh Coalition, the suspect used a golf club during the encounter, which took place near Lankershim Boulevard and Saticoy Street. The assailant, identified as 44-year-old Bo Richard Vitagliano, was arrested late Monday night. He is currently being held on bail set at $1.115 million.
Witnesses to the incident reported hearing a loud commotion but were unclear about how the altercation initiated. Eyewitnesses described two men clashing with metal objects, resulting in injuries to both parties. Despite attempts to intervene, Singh was further assaulted while on the ground. A witness’s shout appeared to deter Vitagliano, who fled on a bicycle.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) located Vitagliano later that evening, using surveillance images that captured the suspect in the act. He was apprehended on Lankershim Boulevard and Arminta Street while still on the bicycle used during the attack.
Singh remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, having undergone multiple surgeries to address severe head and facial injuries. Reports indicate that he has experienced significant trauma, including broken bones and bleeding on the brain.
In the aftermath of the assault, disturbing footage surfaced, depicting Singh sitting on a sidewalk, bleeding and visibly shaken. The weapon remains at the scene, further emphasizing the brutality of the attack.
The Sikh community has historically faced attacks that often stem from misidentification linked to anti-Muslim sentiment. This most recent act of violence has raised concerns about whether it should be classified as a hate crime. While the LAPD initially stated they are not pursuing the case as such, organizations like the Sikh Coalition are urging authorities to reconsider, given the complexity surrounding motivations and community safety.
The Sikh Coalition has expressed doubt over the LAPD’s current stance, noting that the investigation is in its early stages. They highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive interview with the victim, who remains unconscious and unable to provide a detailed account of the incident.
In response to the incident, the LAPD has announced plans for increased patrols in the affected area, aimed at reassuring residents and enhancing safety measures. The community remains vigilant, advocating for justice and better protection against violence targeting its members.
