Assaulted American Tourists Receive Justice: Attackers Jailed for “Cowardly and Violent” Acts

Dublin, Ireland – Two men have been sentenced to jail in Dublin for assaulting and robbing two American tourists in an unprovoked attack last year. The twin brothers, aged 20, were walking through Temple Bar when they were punched, kicked, and had their belongings stolen. One of the attackers, Cian Cleary, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and robbery, while the other attacker, Patrick McCarthy, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm.

The court heard that Cleary, who has a history of previous convictions, cycled by the brothers on a bike before launching the first attack. McCarthy later joined Cleary in assaulting the brothers, resulting in one of them being taken to the hospital with injuries. The judge described the assault as “cowardly, nasty, and very violent” as CCTV footage of the incident was played in court.

Judge Elva Duffy sentenced Cleary to two and a half years in prison, with part of the sentence suspended, and McCarthy to 18 months in jail, with part of the sentence also suspended. She warned both men that the suspended portion of their sentences would be imposed if they reoffended during the probation period.

Aidan McCarthy, Cleary’s defense lawyer, highlighted his client’s troubled background and history of drug use, while Keith Spencer, McCarthy’s defense lawyer, emphasized his client’s education and hopes for future employment in construction. The court acknowledged the impact the assault had on the victims, one of whom required a brain scan due to his injuries.

Overall, the judge underscored the seriousness of the assault and the need for accountability in the sentencing of the two men. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing violence and ensuring justice for victims of such crimes.
