Assaulting American Tourists in Temple Bar: Men Jailed for “Cowardly, Nasty and Very Violent” Attack

Dublin, Ireland – Two assailants have been sentenced to prison for their violent attack on American tourists in the popular Temple Bar area of Dublin. The incident, described as “cowardly, nasty, and very violent” by Judge Elva Duffy, occurred on July 19th last year. The twin brothers, aged 20, were punched, kicked, and robbed of their wallet and phone while walking home.

Cian Cleary, 23, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and robbery of one of the brothers, while Patrick McCarthy, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm to both men. CCTV footage of the assault was shown in court, highlighting the extreme violence of the attack.

Both Cleary and McCarthy have extensive criminal records, with Cleary having 61 previous convictions and McCarthy having 18. The court heard that Cleary initiated the attack by cycling past the brothers before dismounting and striking one of them without provocation. McCarthy then joined in the assault, separating the brothers and continuing the violent attack.

Judge Duffy expressed hope that the assailants were deeply ashamed after seeing the footage in court. The brothers sustained injuries from the attack, with one needing a brain scan due to a welt on his forehead. Cleary was sentenced to three years and three months in prison, with the final nine months suspended, while McCarthy received a two-and-a-half-year sentence, with the final 12 months suspended.

Defense lawyers for Cleary and McCarthy highlighted the challenging backgrounds of their clients, with Cleary experiencing a troubled upbringing and McCarthy having a history of drug use. Both men received warnings from the judge that the suspended portion of their sentences would be imposed if they reoffended during the probation period.

Despite the lack of victim impact statements in court, Judge Duffy emphasized the significant impact the assault had on the young American tourists. Cleary and McCarthy were urged to reflect on their actions and take the opportunity for rehabilitation while serving their sentences.
