Aurora, Illinois – A local man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed violence stemming from a brutal stabbing incident late last year. Duka M. Smith, 49, attacked the victim during an altercation at an apartment on November 12, 2023, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The court heard that a disagreement between Smith and the victim escalated quickly into violence. Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland described the savage nature of the attack, noting that Smith pursued the victim outside, continuing to inflict harm. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the incident, revealing the extent of the assault.
“Violence is never the answer to any conflict,” Orland remarked during the proceedings. She emphasized the necessity of the sentence, which she said reflects the seriousness of Smith’s actions and holds him accountable. Orland commended the victim for his strength and resilience in the face of such adversity.
During the encounter, after an initial struggle, the victim attempted to escape but was followed by Smith into the parking lot. While the victim was on the ground, Smith repeatedly stabbed him in vulnerable areas, including the face, head, and chest.
Fortunately, the victim managed to flee to safety, where he was later discovered with life-threatening injuries but has since shown remarkable recovery. The swift response from local law enforcement and the ensuing investigation were integral to bringing Smith to justice.
Illinois law provides for day-for-day sentencing, allowing Smith to reduce his term for demonstrating good behavior while incarcerated. As of now, he has already accumulated 588 days of credit for time served in the Kane County jail.
