Baltimore Warrant Task Force Delay in Serving Warrants Criticized After 81-Year-Old Murder

Baltimore, Maryland – A disturbing case of domestic abuse and murder in Baltimore has raised questions about the efficiency of the regional justice system. The incident involved a woman in a wheelchair who was held hostage and robbed by her husband, and tragically resulted in the fatal shooting of 81-year-old Jaward Hannah. The delay in serving warrants has brought criticism to both the Baltimore City Police and Baltimore County Police.

According to reports, the woman’s husband allegedly held her against her will, forced her to send him money, and even pointed a pocketknife at her. Despite the woman reporting the incident to police on Nov. 3, the man was not arrested until Nov. 15, after the shooting of Hannah. The delay in serving the arrest warrant has sparked conversations about the priorities and resources allocated to warrant apprehension efforts.

Criticism of the police departments’ handling of warrants is not new. Previous incidents in 2022 involving similar delay in warrant execution resulted in tragic outcomes, including the death of James Blue III. Amidst the scrutiny, police spokesperson Lindsey Eldridge revealed that as of Thursday, there were 72 arrest warrants that have not been served dating back to Jan. 18 of the previous year.

The delay in serving warrants has also had implications in other criminal cases, such as the murder of Lakisha Wheeler near Pikesville High School. In another case, Randallstown NAACP President Ryan Coleman has called for an emphasis on prioritizing warrants to prevent further tragedies, stating, “People are dying. This is not hyperbole.”

The disturbing details of this case, which includes the robbery and murder, have shed light on the challenges faced by law enforcement in serving warrants and raising questions about the effectiveness of the regional justice system in ensuring the safety of its citizens. As the investigation continues, authorities will have to address the concerns raised and work towards a more efficient and timely process in serving arrest warrants to prevent future tragedies.
