MADISON COUNTY, Ill. — A vehicle fire on Interstate 270 late Friday night resulted in the tragic loss of several dogs that were being transported in the vehicle.
Illinois State Police were dispatched to the scene just before 11:30 p.m., responding to reports of a van engulfed in flames near the State Route 159 exit. Upon arrival, officers discovered a white Mercedes Transit Van fully ablaze on the right shoulder of the interstate.
The van was carrying multiple kennels, and while the driver managed to rescue a few dogs, many perished in the fire. The exact number of animals lost remains unclear as authorities continue to assess the situation.
