Bravery in the Face of Danger: Young Book Saleswoman Fights Off Hammer-Wielding Assailant in Lacey

LACEY, Wash. — A 20-year-old woman was reportedly attacked while selling books in a Lacey neighborhood on the morning of June 20. The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. as she approached a house on the 8000 block of North Bicentennial Loop SE.

According to police, the woman had initially engaged in conversation with the occupant of the home, identified as John Kevin Clayton, 53. After expressing interest in purchasing a book, the situation escalated when Clayton returned armed with a hammer. He allegedly pulled the woman inside, physically assaulted her, and threatened her life.

Witnesses report that the young woman fought back fiercely. She managed to kick her assailant in the face before fleeing the residence. During her escape, she took Clayton’s wallet, which later proved crucial in identifying him to authorities.

Upon reaching a nearby residence, the victim was able to contact emergency services, prompting a swift police response. Officers quickly initiated an investigation and obtained a search warrant for Clayton’s home. With assistance from a regional SWAT team, law enforcement apprehended him without further incident.

Clayton is currently detained at Thurston County Jail, facing severe charges that include first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, and felony harassment. He made a preliminary court appearance on June 12, with an arraignment scheduled for June 24, as per court documents.

The victim received medical attention for her injuries at a local hospital, highlighting the seriousness of her ordeal. Law enforcement officials praised her resilience, stating she displayed remarkable courage in the face of grave danger.
