Broward County Man, 30, Faces Charges in Deaths of FHP Trooper, Truck Driver Due to Multiple Arrests and Prosecutorial Failures

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Broward County man, Michael Addison, is facing charges in the deaths of a state trooper and a truck driver. The 30-year-old suspect has a history of arrests and legal troubles in the state, including outstanding warrants related to aggravated battery and weapons charges.

The tragic events unfolded on Interstate 95 when Addison led Florida Highway Patrol Trooper James Zachary Fink on a chase that resulted in a fatal crash, claiming the lives of the 26-year-old trooper and the truck driver. Authorities have not disclosed Addison’s motive for fleeing from the trooper and the subsequent pursuit that led to the deadly collision.

Reports of Addison’s criminal history reveal a pattern of disturbing behavior, including incidents of domestic violence and probation violations. In May 2022, his probation was revoked after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and failing to comply with probation fees.

Despite his troubling past, court records show that Addison was the subject of dropped charges in some instances due to lack of evidence or cooperation from the victims. This includes a case of alleged theft and a domestic violence incident where prosecutors were unable to proceed due to the victim’s refusal to cooperate and insufficient independent evidence.

In addition to his probation violations, Addison had previously faced other legal issues, including charges related to possession of weapons on school property and burglary. His financial troubles also extended to civil matters, as court records indicate that he was evicted from an apartment for failing to pay rent.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, Addison remains in custody at the St. Lucie County Jail without bond. The details of his arrest have not been released by the authorities, leaving the public with questions about the events that led to the devastating loss of life on the interstate.
