Burnsville Shooter Shannon Gooden Unleashes Barrage of Rifle Rounds on Officers Without Warning

Burnsville, MN – A tragic shooting incident unfolded in Burnsville, Minnesota, early Sunday as Shannon Gooden opened fire on police officers inside his home, according to details released by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. More than 100 rifle rounds were fired by Gooden, leading to a standoff with law enforcement.

The police were initially called to the home on the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue in response to a report of a sexual assault. Upon arrival, officers engaged with Gooden, who claimed to be unarmed but refused to leave the home, stating that children were inside. After a 3 1/2 hour negotiation, Gooden suddenly opened fire on the officers without warning, injuring several of them.

During the standoff, officers Matthew Ruge, Paul Elmstrand, and Adam Medlicott were shot, and firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth was also injured while trying to assist the officers. Gooden continued to fire at officers and the armored vehicle, leading to a fatal conclusion when he took his own life inside the bedroom.

As the investigation unfolds, the BCA found several firearms, a large amount of ammunition, and numerous cartridge casings inside the home. The BCA has been tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the 911 call, the incident itself, and the officers’ use of force, presenting their findings to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office for review.

In the wake of this tragic event, a public memorial service has been scheduled for Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth to honor their service and sacrifice. The community has come together to mourn the loss of these brave individuals, showcasing the impact of this devastating incident on the city of Burnsville.
