RENO, Nev. — A recent shooting outside a casino in Reno has shocked the community, resulting in three deaths, including two men from Southern California. The tragedy unfolded on July 28 at the Grand Sierra Resort, a prominent entertainment venue in the area.
According to police reports, the suspected shooter, identified as 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, approached the valet area of the casino, brandishing a firearm. Eyewitnesses noted that his weapon initially jammed, but he was able to get it to fire before fleeing through the parking lot. In his attempt to escape, he encountered a security guard who was also armed.
As Hawver opened fire on the guard, the security professional returned fire, prompting the suspect to flee further. Law enforcement intervened shortly after, shooting Hawver, who succumbed to his injuries days later.
Police have identified the two victims from Southern California as Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33 years old. They were tragically caught in the crossfire while waiting for a ride to the airport. Angel Martinez, a local from Reno, was also killed during the incident as he drove through the parking lot, where Hawver was reportedly hiding behind a parked vehicle.
The investigation, led by police from Sparks, a neighboring city, revealed no known connections between Hawver, the victims, or the casino itself, leaving the motive behind this violent act unclear. Authorities emphasize that the situation appears random and unprovoked.
Two additional individuals sustained injuries during the shooting and are currently hospitalized but are expected to recover fully. Investigators determined that Hawver fired approximately 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun, which he legally purchased two years prior. He reportedly had no criminal record or history of mental health issues.
The Grand Sierra Resort, one of the largest casinos in Reno, is known for hosting a variety of significant events, including concerts and political rallies. Nestled near the California border and northeast of Lake Tahoe, it attracts numerous tourists throughout the summer months.
