CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – Four law enforcement officers in Charlotte lost their lives in a tragic mass shooting incident on Monday. The officers, who were part of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, were on a mission to serve a felony warrant when the suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., opened fire on them.
Among those who tragically lost their lives was Thomas Weeks, a 13-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service. Weeks, 48, had dedicated a decade of service to the Western District of North Carolina and was hailed as a hero by the Director of USMS, Ronald Davis. He leaves behind a wife, Kelly, and four children.
Another fallen officer, Samuel Poloche, 42, had served as a member of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction for 14 years. Poloche’s dedication to service was recognized by Secretary Todd Ishee, who praised him for his commitment to protecting the community. Poloche is survived by his wife and two children.
William Alden Elliott, also a 14-year veteran with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, lost his life in the line of duty. Elliott, 46, served in the department’s Special Operations and Intelligence Unit and was remembered as someone who loved his work and was passionate about serving the community. He leaves behind a wife and one child.
Officer Joshua Eyer, a 31-year-old veteran of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, succumbed to his injuries after bravely fighting for his life in the hospital. Eyer, who had been recently recognized as Officer of the Month, is remembered as a dedicated and exemplary officer. He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together to support the affected families. A GoFundMe campaign organized by Back The Blue North Carolina has raised over $50,000 to aid those impacted by the shooting. Additionally, the officers injured in the incident are receiving medical treatment, with some still in the hospital.
As investigations continue into the shooting, authorities are working to determine the events that led to the tragic loss of these dedicated law enforcement officers. The community mourns the loss of these brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their city.
