Community Collaborates with Police to Capture Suspect in Violent Attack on CCECC Worker in Malaita

Auki, Solomon Islands — Police have apprehended a 40-year-old man suspected of assaulting an employee of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) at a campsite in Malaita Province. The arrest took place on the morning of February 12, following cooperation from local residents.

Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, the Provincial Police Commander for Malaita, reported that law enforcement had previously made multiple unsuccessful attempts to detain the suspect prior to this operation. The collaborative effort from the community played a crucial role in capturing the suspect at his home village early that day.

Following the arrest, the suspect was taken into custody and is currently held at the Auki Correctional Centre. Superintendent Ramosaea indicated that the suspect has continued to issue threats against CCECC employees and police officials subsequent to the violent incident, which occurred on December 9, 2025.

The suspect now faces charges of grievous bodily harm under Section 226 of the national Penal Code and is expected to appear in court at a later date. Furthermore, Ramosaea noted that the individual has pending legal issues from previous cases, for which he had failed to appear in court.

The local police are emphasizing community engagement as a crucial component of their operations, highlighting how public assistance can enhance law enforcement effectiveness. As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring the safety of both the workers at the Kolofe campsite and the surrounding community.
