Community Mourns on What Would Have Been Local Man’s 22nd Birthday After Walmart Shooting Incident

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — On a somber Tuesday that marked what would have been his 22nd birthday, the community gathered to release balloons in memory of Khalaf Barksdale, one of three lives tragically cut short in a violent shooting at a local Walmart.

Friends and family transformed the day of celebration into a poignant vigil, seeking solace and answers amidst the grief. “When you left, half of me left with you,” lamented Barksdale’s girlfriend, her words echoing the deep sorrow of those gathered. “It feels like a dream that I want to wake up from.”

Katrina Williams-Watson, a relative of Barksdale, expressed the family’s disbelief and heartache. “We just never would have imagined he wouldn’t be here for his 22nd birthday,” she said.

The tragedy unfolded when a Walmart employee on Salem Road suddenly opened fire during his shift. Barksdale, who was working overnight, was fatally shot. His co-worker, Ryan Bradley, was also injured in the incident but survived.

The shooter, identified as Dwayne Eduh, escalated the violence by driving to another colleague’s home, where he killed 19-year-old Akeela Clarke before her mother’s eyes. “She fell on impact and in that moment, I knew that my daughter was gone,” recounted a devastated Samantha Clarke.

Eduh’s rampage ended with his own suicide, leaving a community in shock and desperate for answers. Authorities are currently reviewing statements from the surviving victim and analyzing surveillance footage to understand the motives behind Eduh’s actions.

“For this to be so unexpected and not know why is very hard to deal with. Not knowing why he didn’t come home,” Williams-Watson shared, illustrating the relentless pain of uncertainty that lingers.

Friends and family vow to keep the memory of Barksdale and his meaningful life alive, as they strive to find peace and closure. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers are hopeful that the surviving victim, currently recovering in intensive care, may eventually provide insights that could shed light on the dark motives behind the tragedy.

This horrific event has deeply affected the Newton County community, prompting calls for increased security measures and support systems in workplaces to prevent such tragedies in the future. As the investigation continues, residents cling to each other, finding strength in communal grief and shared resolve to honor those lost in senseless violence.
