Community Mourns the Loss of National Guard Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, a Vibrant Advocate for Mental Health

Washington, D.C. — A West Virginia National Guard member, Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, was tragically killed in an ambush-style shooting that has left her community and colleagues heartbroken. The 20-year-old’s coworkers described her as vibrant, humorous, and compassionate, qualities that underscored her commitment to service both in the military and her civilian life.

Marcie Vaughan, CEO of Seneca Health Services, where Beckstrom worked as a community engagement specialist, reflected on her contributions. “She had an infectious sense of humor and truly loved connecting with the community,” Vaughan said. “Sarah was always eager to participate in events and share resources to help others improve their lives.”

Beckstrom was shot on Wednesday, along with another service member, Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, who is currently in critical condition following surgery. Law enforcement is investigating the incident, which appears to have been perpetrated by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, acting alone.

Originally from Summersville, West Virginia, Beckstrom joined the National Guard in June 2023 and was assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade. She had been deployed to the nation’s capital since August as part of a White House crime task force, demonstrating a strong commitment to her role.

“Her mother took immense pride in Sarah’s achievements,” Vaughan noted, expressing sorrow over the loss. “It’s heartbreaking. She was a vibrant young woman whose life was just beginning.”

Colleagues at Seneca are grappling with their grief, anticipating a challenging return to work. “The emotional impact will be profound,” Vaughan remarked. “Everyone is deeply affected, especially with her mother present on the day of the incident.”

Beckstrom was one of approximately 180 National Guard members currently deployed from West Virginia. The tragic events have led to an outpouring of support from both the military community and local residents.

West Virginia’s Governor Patrick Morrisey shared his condolences and admiration for Beckstrom, despite not having met her personally. “The tributes and stories from her unit show how beloved she was. Her fellow service members spoke highly of her character and dedication,” he commented.

As the community mourns, Vaughan emphasized the need for prayers for Beckstrom’s family during this difficult time. “Sarah was proud to serve her country, and it’s a tragedy that her life was cut short in such a violent way,” she said.
