GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND – Dr. James Ryan, a 50-year-old resident of Clarksburg, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for his involvement in the death of 25-year-old Sarah Harris, nearly two years ago. The Germantown doctor had a previous professional relationship with Harris before their romantic involvement led to tragic consequences in January 2022.
Harris, who had initially been a patient of Dr. Ryan’s, later became a surgical technician in his practice. Their professional relationship eventually developed into a romantic one, prosecutors revealed. However, Harris tragically overdosed on a lethal combination of ketamine, propofol, and diazepam in her rented home, leading to her untimely demise.
According to officials, Ryan had been supplying Harris with drugs from his oral surgery practice, and had often administered them himself. When Harris was found unresponsive on the morning of her death, Ryan claimed to have discovered her in that state, surrounded by drug paraphernalia.
Subsequent investigation uncovered incriminating text exchanges between Harris and Ryan, which revealed Ryan’s involvement in procuring and distributing drugs to Harris. Prosecutors emphasized that Harris had developed a serious addiction under Ryan’s influence over the course of several months. Ryan was subsequently convicted by a jury on charges including second-degree depraved heart murder and involuntary manslaughter, as well as possession with the intent to distribute several controlled substances.
The doctor’s conviction comes with a 45-year prison sentence, a lesser punishment than the 55 years he had faced. The case serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of medical professionals abusing their privileges and trust.
