Toronto, Canada – A tragic series of violent incidents in downtown Toronto has led to charges against a 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man, including second-degree murder. The incidents culminated in the death of a 62-year-old man, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an unprovoked attack on August 31.
Toronto police held a press conference Monday, detailing the incidents that transpired in the early morning hours, starting shortly after 6 a.m. The victim was sleeping on a bench near Queen Street West and Bay Street when he was allegedly assaulted with a weapon by the two accused. One of the assailants was reportedly armed with a hammer.
Following the assault, the victim was treated for serious injuries and discharged from the hospital. Tragically, on September 4, he was found unresponsive in a separate area of the city and was later pronounced dead. Investigators determined that his death was linked to the earlier attack.
Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the violent nature of these crimes, emphasizing that the perpetrators targeted vulnerable individuals within the downtown core. “This was a distressing pattern of violence,” McCabe remarked, noting that each incident was characterized by its brutality.
Authorities revealed that the violent spree included multiple assaults that occurred between 5:45 a.m. and 8:07 a.m. on the day in question. The first attack involved an unhoused man near Yonge and Dundas streets, where he was severely beaten but managed to escape. Shortly thereafter, the suspects encountered another unhoused individual, who was also assaulted.
As the pair continued their path of violence, they approached a third victim, an elderly man, in the Yonge and Gerrard area. When they asked to use his phone, they seized it and pushed him to the ground when he attempted to reclaim it. Their final act of aggression occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at Yonge and College streets. After another failed phone request, the suspects allegedly slapped the device from a man’s hand and threw an object at him.
The police acted promptly after the last incident, apprehending the suspects shortly after they fled. Both individuals face serious charges, including two counts of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. The adult suspect is also facing charges related to robbery.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims who encountered the suspects during their crime spree and encourage anyone with information to come forward. The police are committed to ensuring the safety of all residents, especially those who are most vulnerable in the community.
