Day in Jacksonville: Southside Shooting Claims Life of 38-Year-Old Man in Restaurant Parking Lot

Jacksonville, Florida – A 38-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of a popular restaurant on the city’s Southside, sending shockwaves through the community. Family members identified the victim as Kenneth Mobley.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of the shooting at Copeland’s, located at the intersection of Southside Boulevard and Touchton Road. Law enforcement quickly established a large presence at the scene, deploying a helicopter, drone, and K-9 units in their initial investigation.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Mobley suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities indicated that Mobley was at the restaurant to meet someone, but details concerning the nature of the meeting remain unclear.

“This incident is particularly brazen, especially in broad daylight with so many people around,” said a local crime analyst, highlighting the alarming nature of the shooting given its location and time.

In the aftermath, three individuals were taken into custody for questioning, but it is still undetermined whether any of them were directly involved in the shooting. The sheriff’s office is also looking for a dark-colored four-door vehicle, possibly a Nissan, which was seen in the vicinity during the incident.

Witness reports paint a chaotic scene. Yana Royter, an employee at a nearby coffee shop, described the panic that ensued as she and her coworkers sought safety after hearing gunfire. “It all happened so quickly, and at first, we didn’t know what was happening. We locked the door just to take precautions,” she recounted.

This shooting was one of three incidents reported that day in Jacksonville. Just after 5:30 p.m., police received reports of another shooting in the Magnolia Gardens neighborhood, where a man was found with two gunshot wounds. He was later hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.

The third incident occurred around 9 p.m. at the Vista Landing apartments on Cleveland Road, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old and injuries to three others. Authorities have characterized those victims’ conditions as serious.

Police are actively working to piece together the circumstances leading up to each shooting, but as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with any of the incidents. “It’s difficult to gather information, as many witnesses are hesitant to come forward,” remarked the crime analyst.

The ongoing investigations have left the community on edge, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant information to contact the sheriff’s office. Residents are left grappling with the unsettling reality of such violence in their neighborhood.
