Deadly Night in N’Djamena: Fire at Military Depot Triggers Fatal Explosions, Injuring Dozens

N’Djamena, Chad – A devastating fire ignited a series of explosions at a military ammunition depot in the capital of Chad late Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of nine people and injuring over 40 others, according to government officials. The aftermath of the explosions jolted residents from their sleep and filled the skies of N’Djamena with thick smoke.

Government spokesperson Abderaman Koulamallah confirmed the tragedy on Wednesday, stating that emergency services had managed to bring the situation under control, with 46 individuals receiving treatment for various injuries. The impacted area, located in the Goudji district, saw residents fleeing their homes in a panic, under the impression that the explosions were part of an armed attack.

The noise of the blasts, which began just before midnight, caused nearby structures to tremble, spreading fear and confusion among the populace. Shaken and covering from falling debris, the local community sought to make sense of the chaotic situation as scattered ammunition propelled with explosive force from the depot.

Authorities swiftly responded by cordoning off the area, allowing security forces to collect the scattered artillery shells amid ongoing investigative efforts to determine the initial cause of the fire that triggered the explosions. The rapid response included an extensive law enforcement presence to ensure the evacuation and security of affected residents.

President Mahamat Déby Itno, addressing the nation, expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He also announced that a thorough investigation would be undertaken to uncover the origins of the fire. Déby later visited the explosion site and several hospitals to oversee the response efforts and provide support to the victims and their families.

The incident has drawn attention to the broader context of political instability and security challenges facing Chad. The country, with a population nearing 18 million, has been grappling with political turbulence following a controversial presidential election and an ongoing military rule initiated after the death of Déby’s father in 2021.

Security experts, such as Cameron Hudson from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, suggested that the timing and nature of the explosions could be indicative of underlying political messages. Although not directly implying foul play, Hudson mentioned the significance of internal and regional tensions, particularly with the ongoing conflicts in neighboring Sudan, which could escalate conflicts within Chad itself.

With the recent upheaval, community members have called on the government for increased support and protection. Residents like Allamine Moussa appealed to authorities for swift and decisive action to help those affected recover and ensure the safety of the district. Many families have suffered, not only because of the immediate physical damages but also the emotional distress brought by such sudden and violent disturbances.

As investigations continue, the stability of the region remains uncertain, with each unfolding event closely watched by both national and international observers. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of peace in regions fraught with political and military strife.
