Government spokesperson Abderaman Koulamallah confirmed the tragedy on Wednesday, stating that emergency services had managed to bring the situation under control, with 46 individuals receiving treatment for various injuries. The impacted area, located in the Goudji district, saw residents fleeing their homes in a panic, under the impression that the explosions were part of an armed attack.
The noise of the blasts, which began just before midnight, caused nearby structures to tremble, spreading fear and confusion among the populace. Shaken and covering from falling debris, the local community sought to make sense of the chaotic situation as scattered ammunition propelled with explosive force from the depot.
Authorities swiftly responded by cordoning off the area, allowing security forces to collect the scattered artillery shells amid ongoing investigative efforts to determine the initial cause of the fire that triggered the explosions. President Mahamat Déby Itno, addressing the nation, expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
