Discovery: Coroner Confirms Murder-Suicide in Spartanburg Family’s Deaths

Greer, South Carolina — Authorities are investigating the tragic deaths of three family members discovered in their home on Saturday. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 54-year-old Richard Samarel, 45-year-old Lina Maria Samarel, and their nine-year-old daughter, Samantha Samarel. Deputies from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check around 11:30 a.m. at a residence on Marilyn Perry Lane, off Reidville Road.

Upon their arrival, deputies entered the home and found all three individuals unresponsive. The coroner’s office reported that the time of death for the family members occurred between 10:20 a.m. and 11:29 a.m. on the same day.

In an update released on June 23, investigators confirmed the cause and manner of death. According to the coroner, both Lina and Samantha were shot and killed, while Richard sustained a gunshot wound that was ruled a suicide.
