LANSING, Mich. — Authorities are sounding the alarm for Michigan residents to inspect their freezers and dispose of certain frozen chicken products linked to a serious health concern. A recent recall has been prompted by a nationwide Listeria outbreak that has become a major public health issue.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall after 17 individuals fell ill, resulting in three fatalities and one fetal loss across 13 states. Public health officials are actively monitoring the situation as they investigate the outbreak to safeguard consumers.
Several ready-to-eat chicken products distributed by FreshRealm, a popular supplier, have been identified in the recall. These items were sold in major grocery chains including Kroger and Walmart, making it imperative for shoppers to check their supplies.
Included in the recall are 32.8-ounce trays labeled as “MARKETSIDE GRILLED CHICKEN ALFREDO WITH FETTUCCINE,” with a best-by date of June 27, 2025, or earlier. Another item in the recall is a smaller 12.3-ounce tray containing a similar dish with broccoli, carrying a best-by date of June 26, 2025, or before. A third recalled option is a 12.5-ounce tray featuring “HOME CHEF Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo,” valid until June 19, 2025, or earlier.
Consumers should be vigilant for specific markings on the packaging, including USDA inspection labels and establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” or “EST. P-47718,” as these indicate the products involved in the recall.
According to health experts, Listeria contamination can lead to severe infections known as listeriosis, which manifests through symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headaches, and neck stiffness. In vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals, the infection can be particularly dangerous.
Public health officials strongly advise anyone who has purchased the recalled items not to consume them. Instead, residents should discard the products immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
As the investigation continues, local health departments are urging residents to stay informed and be proactive in checking their food supplies, highlighting the importance of food safety in preventing further illness.
