DOJ Expected to Release Report on Uvalde School Shooting Response Nearly 2 Years Later

The Uvalde, Texas community is anticipating the release of the U.S. Department of Justice’s analysis of law enforcement’s response to the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School almost two years ago. The shooting, which occurred in May 2022, resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two teachers. Families affected by the shooting have been seeking transparency and accountability regarding the law enforcement response.

Attorney Jamal Alsaffar, representing multiple impacted families, expressed the emotional toll the shooting has taken on the families. He also mentioned their disappointment with the lack of progress in the investigation by the state and county DA, which has been ongoing for almost two years.

Associate Dean of Criminology at Tarleton State University, Alex Del Carmen, expects the DOJ’s report to reinforce some of the findings from the Texas House’s report, which highlighted systemic failures and poor decision-making during the massacre. This report is also anticipated to provide recommendations for best practices and potentially speed up court processes for the affected families and their attorneys.

One of the parents, Brett Cross, who lost his son in the shooting, expressed his hope for the report to reveal the actions, or lack thereof, of the responding officers and to hold them accountable for their roles that day. He also emphasized the need for transparency regarding the role of the Texas Department of Public Safety in the response.

The report is awaited to shed light on the details of what went wrong and to offer a critical analysis to improve law enforcement response to mass shootings. The impact of the tragedy on the families and the community as a whole continues to be profound, and the hope is that the report will provide the much-needed accountability and learning to prevent future tragedies.
