Plainfield, Illinois – A semi-tractor trailer transporting water ignited in flames early Tuesday morning on Route 59, as confirmed by Plainfield Fire Chief Vito Bonomo.
Responding to the incident at approximately 12:31 a.m., emergency crews found the tractor completely engulfed in fire upon arrival in downtown Plainfield. Fortunately, the flames did not spread to the trailer, with Bonomo indicating that the fire likely originated in the engine compartment.
Some local residents reported hearing a loud explosion, which Bonomo attributed to tires bursting in the inferno. The police closed down Route 59 between Route 126 and Lockport Street until around 3:40 a.m. as a precautionary measure.
Despite the intensity of the fire, responders managed to extinguish it in a relatively short time frame of about 5 minutes. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries stemming from the incident.
Chief Bonomo expressed relief that the trailer was carrying bottles of water, presumably minimizing the risk of further damage or more serious consequences.
