Wilmington, Los Angeles, came together to show their support for the firefighters injured in a tragic truck explosion that occurred two months ago. The community organized a day of donations and dedication to honor the firefighters from LAFD stations 38 and 49, who were the first responders at the scene when the explosion happened in February.
Nine firefighters were injured, with two of them in critical condition, after a natural gas-powered truck caught fire and exploded. Despite the severity of their injuries, all firefighters have returned to work since the incident. The community’s efforts to support the injured firefighters were evident in the fundraising events held to help them.
Deputy Chief Stephen Gutierrez from LAFD emphasized the importance of events like these in fostering healing for both the community and the firefighters. These events serve as a reminder of the risks firefighters face every day, while also reaffirming the community’s support for their dedicated service.
California Assemblymember Mike Gipson was also present at the fundraising event, highlighting the need for improvements in fire stations to ensure a comfortable environment for firefighters between calls. The donations collected will go towards renovating the fire stations for the wellbeing of those who courageously put their lives on the line for others.
City Councilman Tim McOsker played a pivotal role in organizing the fundraising barbeque at Wilmington Town Square Park, where the community gathered to express their gratitude to the heroes who serve their hometown. The event not only allowed residents to thank the firefighters but also raised $51,000 towards essential repairs needed at the fire stations.
