Florida woman plots to slit husband’s throat with box cutter and then kill their son

LEHIGH ACRES, FL – A Lehigh Acres woman faces serious charges after authorities say she orchestrated a suicide pact involving her husband and their adult son, who has developmental disabilities, amid mounting financial and personal struggles. All three family members survived the ordeal and are recovering from their injuries.

According to investigators, Barbara Bates, 59, told detectives she began devising a plan to end the family’s lives months ago, unable to cope with ongoing family hardship and her son’s medical issues. Police said she tried, unsuccessfully, to obtain a firearm and later turned to sleeping pills and a box cutter as part of the plan.

Barbara Bates reportedly acquired sleeping medication with the specific intention of administering it to her husband, Neil Bates, 64, and their son, who has Asperger’s syndrome and additional physical limitations. Detectives say she also purchased alcohol for the planned event and selected a steak dinner and a horror movie to share as their final family gathering.

On the day of the incident, the family ate their last meal together and watched a movie before moving to the master bedroom, authorities said. After consuming sleeping pills and alcohol, Neil is alleged to have used a box cutter to wound himself, though Barbara later took the blade and inflicted deeper cuts to his neck.

Police reports indicate Barbara then slashed her son’s neck as he lay beside his father, causing panic and changing his mind about participating further. Detectives say Barbara lingered in the room, checking on the blood flow, before cutting her own wrists in an attempt to ensure the pact’s success.

After about 40 minutes, Barbara called 911, stating the details of what transpired. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and found all three family members alive but injured. Barbara, still conscious, reportedly expressed frustration to authorities that they had arrived too quickly to prevent resuscitation.

All three were rushed to a hospital, where doctors said their injuries were not life-threatening and that full recovery is expected. During interviews at the hospital, the son recalled becoming distressed after feeling his father’s blood and said he did not want to go through with the pact once his mother cut his throat.

Neil Bates told detectives that the pact was initially agreed upon by all, though he was hesitant to admit who originated the plan. At various points, Neil said it was his son who wanted to move forward with the pact, but also expressed regret and recounted that all three were acting irrationally at the time.

Barbara and Neil described longstanding challenges in their household, including the son’s special needs, job loss, and an imminent eviction notice, all of which contributed to their despair. Barbara reportedly said she felt overwhelmed and saw no viable path forward for her family.

Medical staff said all three individuals are receiving appropriate treatment and are expected to recover physically. However, Barbara Bates told investigators at the hospital that she remained regretful the plan did not work and showed no remorse for her actions.

Authorities charged Barbara Bates with attempted murder and aggravated child abuse. Neil Bates faces charges of attempted life felony and aggravated abuse of a disabled adult. Both remain in custody without the possibility of bond.
