Freshman Student Murdered at Friendship Heights Hotel – Suspect Arrested for Second-Degree Murder

Police arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death of an 18-year-old woman at a hotel in Friendship Heights, Washington, D.C.’s first reported homicide of 2024. Paramedics responded to the report of the shooting at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Military Road NW about 1:15 a.m. Monday. The victim, Ashlei Hinds, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a freshman at Louisiana State University.

Hinds’ mother described her as a caring, good-hearted individual who was never in trouble. Police arrested 18-year-old Jelani Cousin of Northeast D.C. and charged him with second-degree murder while armed. According to a law enforcement source, about 10 people were attending a party inside a hotel room when the shooting occurred.

Family members indicated that Hinds had attended a New Year’s Eve party at the hotel, reportedly with some uninvited guests who had crashed the party. Witnesses at the hotel reported hearing gunshots and screaming before the shooting.

Hinds’ tragic death comes as the city of D.C. ended the previous year with 274 homicides, marking the highest number in more than two decades. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her commitment to address this disturbing trend through new legislation that is pending approval. Anyone with potentially relevant information is urged to contact the police.

The victim’s family described Hinds as a churchgoer and a helpful individual who was always willing to lend a hand. The investigation is ongoing, and the hotel management is cooperating with the police. It is yet to be determined if Hinds was the intended target of the shooter. This incident highlights the urgency for addressing the issue of gun violence within the city.
