Dresden, Germany – A violent assault on Social Democrat politician Matthias Ecke has sparked a nationwide debate on the increasing aggression towards public figures in Germany. The attack, carried out by four German teenagers, resulted in serious injuries for Ecke, who is a member of the European parliament for the Social Democrats and their main candidate for the upcoming election on 7 June. Police have identified three suspects, with one 17-year-old turning himself in and admitting his involvement in the attack that left Ecke hospitalized with a broken cheekbone and eye socket.
The suspects, identified by their first names and surname initials, are Quentin J, 17, who voluntarily went to a police station with his mother, and Leander H, also 17. Following the attack, thousands of people in several German cities, including Dresden and Berlin, took to the streets to protest the violence against politicians and election campaign volunteers, amid a rise in assaults on politicians over the past months.
The attack on Ecke has received condemnation from politicians across Germany and the EU, leading to calls for increased security for politicians and harsher penalties for those responsible. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, it is reported that the teenagers were intoxicated at the time. Federal interior minister Nancy Faeser attributed the rising violence to hate-filled rhetoric from the far right and vowed to implement tougher measures to protect democratic politicians.
