Off-Duty Officer Fatally Shot in Case of Mistaken Identity: Trial Begins

Portland, Oregon – An off-duty Vancouver Police Officer, Donald Sahota, tragically lost his life on the night of January 29, 2022, when a man entered his home near Battle Ground and attacked him. The intruder, identified as Julio Segura, engaged in a confrontation with Sahota that ultimately resulted in Sahota being stabbed outside his own residence.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Clark County Deputy Jonathan Feller mistakenly shot and killed Sahota as he struggled with Segura on the front porch. This case highlights the dangers and complexities that law enforcement officers face, even in their own homes. Sahota’s wife had to call 911 while witnessing the harrowing incident unfold.

Julio Segura now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and a range of other offenses related to the incident. Investigators revealed that Segura had been armed during a robbery at a Chevron convenience store before randomly driving to Sahota’s home in a stolen vehicle.

During the altercation, Segura inflicted life-threatening injuries on Sahota by stabbing him, puncturing his lung. The wounds from the stabbing were severe, but it was the gunshot wounds that ultimately claimed Sahota’s life, according to the medical examiner who conducted the autopsy.

Despite the tragedy, Clark County Sheriff’s Office announced that Deputy Feller would not face charges in the shooting death of Officer Sahota after a thorough investigation. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the case, determining the legal outcomes for those involved.

As the trial for Julio Segura unfolds in Clark County Superior Court, the community remains vigilant, seeking justice for the fallen officer.
