Guilty Plea in Violent Hate Crimes Against Orthodox Jewish Community in Ocean County

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey – A man from Ocean County has pleaded guilty to committing hate crimes against members of the Orthodox Jewish community in and around Lakewood. Dion Marsh was charged with attempting to kill and harm five Jewish people in 2022, including running over four individuals with a stolen vehicle and stabbing one of them in the chest.

The U.S. Attorney, Philip Sellinger, emphasized the sad reality of hate-fueled violence across the state and nation, stating that “hate is not who we are.” Sellinger expressed the importance of respecting and protecting the civil rights of all individuals, regardless of their appearance, religious practices, background, or sexual orientation.

Marsh’s sentencing is scheduled for June 11, where he will face the consequences of his actions.

Hate crimes have detrimental effects on entire communities, spreading fear and unease among targeted groups. The violent and deliberate nature of Marsh’s actions not only caused physical harm but also instilled a sense of insecurity among the Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood. Authorities must continue to address and combat hate crimes to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.

The guilty plea serves as a reminder of the persistence of hatred and intolerance in society, prompting the need for ongoing education and advocacy to promote acceptance and understanding among diverse communities. It is crucial for law enforcement, government officials, and community leaders to work together in addressing the root causes of hate crimes and implementing measures to prevent such acts of violence.
