Haiti Declares State of Emergency After Violent Prison Break by Armed Gangs

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – In the wake of a violent attack on the main prison in Haiti by armed gangs, the Haitian government has implemented a 72-hour state of emergency. The devastating prison invasion resulted in several deaths and left less than 100 of the 4,000 inmates behind bars. The government described the attacks as acts of “disobedience” that pose a threat to national security.

Human rights attorney Arnel Remy, who heads a non-profit organization working within the prisons, shared harrowing details from the chaos, with Colombians urgently pleading for their lives in videos during the unrest. The deteriorating situation prompted calls for mobilization of the army and police to prevent further violence and secure the prisons.

The timing of the attack coincided with Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s absence from the country as he sought support for a UN-backed security force to stabilize Haiti. The incidents in the capital, including the targeted killings of police officers and attacks on police stations, have heightened fears among civilians, leading to the closure of businesses and schools for safety.

Former police officer Jimmy Chérizier, now a gang leader, claimed responsibility for the attacks and expressed intentions to capture key government officials and prevent the president’s return. In response, the President signed agreements with Kenyan President William Ruto to deploy Kenyan police forces to assist in restoring order.

Among those embroiled in the chaos are 18 former Colombian soldiers accused of involvement in a plot to assassinate the late President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Gang leader Jimmy Cherizier has called for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry and emphasized unity among armed groups in various parts of the country.

The escalation of violence in Haiti underscores the challenges faced by the government in maintaining law and order amidst growing unrest and criminal activities. The international community’s support and collaboration, as evidenced by the agreements with Kenya, play a crucial role in addressing the security crisis and restoring stability in the country.
